UN condemns US airstrike in Yemen as outrage escalates globally

The United Nations has expressed deep alarm over US airstrikes in Yemen, including a deadly attack on a detention center for African migrants in Sa’ada governorate, resulting in significant civilian casualties.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The United Nations has expressed deep alarm over US airstrikes in Yemen, including a deadly attack on a detention center for African migrants in Sa’ada governorate, resulting in significant civilian casualties.

Nearly 70 inmates were killed and over 50 others injured during Monday’s US airstrike targeting the detention facility in Sa’ada province.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN chief, highlighted the growing risks posed to Yemen’s civilian population, including women and children, by these airstrikes. He described the loss of life as tragic, expressing sorrow for the many deaths and injuries among the migrants.

Dujarric urged all parties involved to honor their obligations under international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians, while emphasizing that Yemeni hospitals are overwhelmed by the surge in critically injured patients.

The attack has sparked widespread condemnation globally.

Iran has strongly denounced the strike, categorizing the US attacks on Yemeni civilians and infrastructure as war crimes. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei criticized the UN and human rights organizations for their silence and indifference to what he described as violations of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Yemen's Ansarullah movement also condemned the airstrike, labeling it a "brutal crime" and accusing Washington of deliberately targeting civilians under the guise of military operations.

In response to US aggression in Yemen and Israeli atrocities in Gaza, Yemeni Armed Forces initiated strikes on Israeli, American, and British interests in the Red Sea and surrounding regions.

Yemeni naval and air force units conducted a joint operation using domestically-produced cruise and ballistic missiles alongside combat drones, targeting the USS Harry S. Truman and other American warships in the Red Sea.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, Yemen’s military spokesperson, stated that the strikes were carried out in retaliation for the deadly US airstrikes, adding that Yemen’s Armed Forces would continue pursuing and targeting hostile warships in the Red and Arabian Seas until the aggression ceases.

As the war on Gaza escalates, Yemen has imposed a strategic blockade on key maritime routes, aiming to disrupt military supply lines to Israel and urging the international community to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Yemeni Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to continue their operations until Israel halts its ground and aerial offensives in Gaza.
